Oresund Bridge connects Sweden and Denmark.

The Øresund Bridge, also sometimes called the Oresund Bridge, is a marvel of modern engineering that connects two Scandinavian countries. This combined road and railway bridge stretches for nearly 8 kilometers (5 miles) across the Øresund strait, a body of water that separates Denmark and Sweden.

The bridge isn’t one continuous structure, but rather a combination of elements. The journey starts on the Swedish coast with a cable-stayed bridge section that extends 7.8 kilometers (4.8 miles) to a man-made island called Peberholm in the middle of the strait.

This bridge section allows for impressive views and boasts a maximum height of 57 meters (187 feet) over the water. From Peberholm, travelers continue their journey through a 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) immersed tunnel called the Drogden Tunnel, which runs under the seabed and emerges on the Danish island of Amager.

The Øresund Bridge isn’t just a scenic route, it’s a significant symbol of unity. Completed in 2000, it bridged not just the physical gap between Denmark and Sweden but also historic tensions. Today, the bridge facilitates daily commutes for thousands of people, strengthens economic ties between the two nations, and serves as a testament to human ingenuity.
