The Gülek Kulesi in Turkey.

-

Gülek Castle, also known as Gülek Kulesi, is a historical ruin located on a mountaintop in Mersin, Turkey. Initially used by the Byzantines and Arabs, its most significant construction occurred in the 12th and 13th centuries by the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia.

During this period, the castle flourished, with its imposing walls, particularly those on the south and west sides.

The walls, stretching 450 meters, solidified the critical checkpoint between Cilicia and Cappadocia. Travelers likely paid tolls to the castle’s lord, ensuring safe passage through its Cilician Gates.

Gülek Castle’s history doesn’t end there; the Mamluks of Egypt eventually captured it, followed by the Ottomans, who even utilized the nearby lead mines. However, time and battles took their toll on the castle. Today, Gülek Castle stands as a majestic ruin, serving as a reminder of its glorious past.

Although sections have been damaged, the remaining walls and towers, along with breathtaking views, continue to draw hikers and history enthusiasts to the site. As archaeologist Dr. John Davis states, “Gülek Castle offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s layered history and its strategic importance through the ages.”
