The Eye of the Earth, also known as the Izvor Cetine (Croatian for “source of Cetina”), is a breathtaking natural spring at the foot of the Dinara mountain range in southern Croatia. This spring’s most remarkable features are its shape and color, with crystal-clear, turquoise water emerging from a deep opening in the earth.
The source is believed to come from an underground aquifer that feeds the Cetina River, which eventually empties into the Adriatic Sea. The Eye of the Earth is a relatively undiscovered gem compared to other tourist attractions in Croatia. It is off the main tourist routes, located near the village of Cetina in the Milasevo region.
The exact depth of the spring is unknown, though divers have explored to a depth of up to 115 meters (377 feet). While swimming isn’t recommended due to the icy cold water, visitors can enjoy the beauty of the surroundings and explore the nearby hiking trails. The nearest airport is about an hour north of the spring. You can easily rent a car and drive yourself, or join an organized tour.
As environmental expert Dr. Ana Jovic states, “The Eye of the Earth is a stunning natural wonder that offers a unique glimpse into the geological processes at work beneath the Earth’s surface.”
