U.S. Route 50 in Nevada is often referred to as the “Loneliest Road in America.” The title was bestowed upon it by Life magazine in 1986 due to its uninhabited landscape and minimal human presence.
The Nevada portion of U.S. Route 50 spans approximately 325 miles (523 kilometers) across the state’s high desert. Along the way, visitors will encounter stunning natural scenery, including Great Basin National Park, the Ruby Mountains, and the historic town of Austin.
While the title “the Loneliest Road in America” may be somewhat of a misnomer, as the highway does see some traffic, it certainly provides an unforgettable experience for those seeking solitude and adventure.
“U.S. Route 50 offers a unique journey through some of the most remote and beautiful landscapes in the United States,” says travel expert and author Sarah Thompson. “It’s a road that invites introspection, making it a perfect escape for travelers looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature.”
