Lal Baba, also known as “The Matted Hair,” is renowned for having the longest dreadlocks in the world. These dreadlocks are a symbol of his renunciation of worldly life and his dedication to a spiritual path.

Length

Lal Baba’s dreadlocks are estimated to be over 22 feet long. They have been growing for the past 40 years and are so long that he often wraps them around his body or carries them in a bag. “I’ve carried this weight for decades, and while it can be difficult, it’s a reminder of my commitment to the path I’ve chosen,” he explains.

Spiritual Significance

In Hinduism, matted hair, or dreadlocks, are associated with asceticism and spiritual devotion. They symbolize a rejection of vanity and material possessions to focus on inner growth. “These locks are not just hair; they are my offering to the divine,” Lal Baba says. “Through them, I renounce the distractions of the material world and dedicate myself to a higher purpose.”

Lifestyle

Lal Baba lives a nomadic life, traveling between holy sites in India and Nepal. Known for his gentle and peaceful demeanor, he relies on the kindness of strangers for food and shelter. “People are very kind. I receive what I need, and I give them blessings in return,” he shares. Maintaining his long dreadlocks is no easy task. Lal Baba explains, “Washing and drying them requires patience and help from others. They’ve become a part of me, but they do require care.”

Lal Baba’s dreadlocks are a visual representation of his spiritual journey and commitment. He is a respected figure in the Hindu community and serves as an example to those seeking a simpler, more spiritual life. “My life is not about possessions or comfort,” he says. “It is about finding peace within and sharing that peace with the world.”
