The door to hell is a natural gas field located in Turkmenistan. It got its name due to its continuous burning since 1971.

The door to hell is a large crater-like pit, surrounded by natural gas fields. The burning of the gas creates a glowing effect which can be #noticed from afar.

The place came to be after a drilling accident. The accident caused leakage and the soviet union geologist feared that the gas would affect the environment.

So they decided to light the gas up. But, unexpectedly, the door to hell has continued to burn since then.

It has been a major tourist destination for the past 50 years.
